‘Blessed are the poor in spirit.’ – Matthew 5:1-12a
Jesus goes up on the mountain and, seeing the crowds, begins to teach His disciples, proclaiming the Beatitudes, a radical reversal of worldly values. He declares, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” “Blessed are those who mourn,” and “Blessed are the meek,” revealing that true blessedness comes not from status or success, but from humility and dependence on God.
‘Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.’ – Luke 14:1, 7-11
At a banquet, Jesus observes guests vying for places of honour and teaches them a powerful lesson, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”. He challenges social ambition, advocating for humble exaltation, the way of God, not the way of the world.
‘Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not pull him out?’ – Luke 14:1-6
Jesus challenges those present with a penetrating question: “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not pull him out?”. By asking this, He emphasises that compassion takes precedence over ritual observance.
