Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another? – Matthew 11:2-11
John the Baptist, imprisoned, sends his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are You the one who is to come?” Jesus responds by pointing to His works: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive the good news.
Elijah has already come, and they did not recognise him. – Matthew 17:9a, 10-13
This Gospel challenges us to open our eyes and hearts to God’s quiet invitations, which often come in unexpected forms. We frequently overlook God’s grace because it arrives through ordinary people, difficult moments, or unwelcome truths.
They listened to neither John nor the Son of Man. – Matthew 11:16-19
Jesus speaks of a generation that refuses to listen, whether to John’s call to repentance or to the Son of Man’s call to mercy. He laments that, like children who reject any role, people’s hearts become resistant when expectations replace faith.
