Explanation

At a banquet, Jesus observes guests vying for places of honour and teaches them a powerful lesson, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted”. He challenges social ambition, advocating for humble exaltation, the way of God, not the way of the world. By advising guests to choose the lowest seat, Jesus shows that true greatness comes through humility, not pride. Humbling oneself leads to honour from God, while seeking glory for oneself leads to humiliation. Jesus reveals that those who lower themselves in spirit are exalted by God. His message is clear, trust God to lift us up, rather than seeking our own glory, and live with humility before Him.

Reflection

I often fall into the trap of self-promotion or comparing myself to others, seeking recognition and status. Today’s Gospel invites me to practice humble exaltation, serving quietly, lifting others, and trusting God to exalt me in His time. In embracing true humility, I let go of the desire for recognition and open myself to God’s authentic exaltation. This call to humility extends beyond banquets, it challenges me to choose the lower place in all aspects of life, not out of false modesty, but from genuine self awareness and trust in God. By walking the quieter path of humility, I serve without needing credit, forgive without pride, and love without expecting return. As I humble myself, I make space for God’s presence and peace to grow within me, drawing closer to Christ’s heart.

Questions for Reflection

  • Where in my life do I crave recognition rather than serve quietly?
  • How can I practice humility in my family, work, or community today?
  • In what situations do I struggle with pride or a desire to be seen as important?
  • Do I allow pride to block my relationship with Christ or others?
Banquet of Compassion and Humility

Practice true humility by intentionally taking a “lower place” today, whether by serving without seeking recognition, listening more than speaking, or giving credit to others.

Meditation

  • Reflect on Jesus’ teaching about choosing the lowest place.
  • Pray, “Lord, teach me the path of humble exaltation.”
  • Ask, “Help me to lay down pride, serve with love, trust You to raise me.”
  • Imagine God’s gentle hand lifting you up when you humble yourself

Lord, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours.
