Luke 17:7-10

Explanation

In this passage, Jesus tells a parable about a servant who, after completing his duties, does not expect special praise but recognises that he has only done what was required. Jesus uses this image to teach His disciples humility and a right understanding of service to God. When we have done all that is commanded, we are to say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.” Our service does not earn God’s gratitude or favour, it is our loving response to His grace. Jesus calls us to serve with humble hearts, remembering that everything we do for God flows from His goodness, not our merit. True discipleship means serving faithfully out of love and gratitude, without seeking recognition or reward.

Reflection

Today I choose to serve with the heart of a humble servant, doing my tasks not for attention or reward but out of love for God. Every gift and opportunity I have comes from Him, and my service is simply a grateful response to His grace. This Gospel challenges me to let go of entitlement and the desire for recognition, embracing instead the joy of selfless service. When I see myself as an unworthy servant, I become free from the need for praise and find peace in serving for God alone. Every act—whether in prayer, work, or charity—becomes an expression of humility and love. In this way, I reflect Christ’s servant heart and grow in deeper communion with Him, discovering that true greatness in God’s kingdom flows from humble, faithful service.

Questions for Reflection

  • Do I act out of love for God or out of desire for recognition?
  • Where in my life am I seeking recognition or thanks, instead of quietly doing what is required?
  • How does adopting a humble servant attitude change the way I do my work or help others?
  • What is one way I can perform a duty today without seeking any praise for it?
Humble Servant Attitude

Choose one humble act of service today, perform it quietly, and live out the humble servant attitude without expecting applause. Act today as one of Jesus’ servants, serve faithfully, humbly, and without expecting reward.

Meditation

  • Lord Jesus, I come before You as Your servant.
  • Teach me the humble servant attitude to work faithfully without seeking praise.
  • Strip away my desire for worldly applause and recognition.
  • I pray to live as one of Your servants, doing what is required and trusting in Your grace. Amen.

Lord, help me serve humbly without reward.
