Matthew 17:9a, 10-13

Explanation

In this passage, Jesus tells the disciples that Elijah has already come, referring to John the Baptist. However, people failed to recognise him and rejected the one sent to prepare their hearts. Jesus uses this moment to highlight that God often speaks through humble and unexpected messengers. When we embrace the theme of recognising God’s messengers, we learn to stay alert to how God works in our daily lives. After the Transfiguration, the disciples ask Jesus why the scribes say Elijah must come first. Jesus affirms that Elijah does come, but then reveals that he has already come in the person of John the Baptist. He clarifies that John fulfilled the prophetic role of Elijah, preparing the way for the Messiah, yet was rejected. In these teachings, Jesus not only shows how God works through unexpected messengers but also prepares the disciples for His own suffering, which many will misunderstand. Recognising God’s messengers calls us to stay attentive to His presence in ordinary people and daily events.

Reflection

This Gospel challenges us to open our eyes and hearts to God’s quiet invitations, which often come in unexpected forms. We frequently overlook God’s grace because it arrives through ordinary people, difficult moments, or unwelcome truths. To recognise God’s messengers today means listening more attentively, to Scripture, the Church, and the gentle stirrings of the Holy Spirit in our daily encounters. It highlights the importance of spiritual discernment and being open to God’s work in surprising ways. Like those who failed to see that “Elijah has already come,” we can miss divine opportunities if we are not open to God’s surprising presence in our lives. Jesus invites us to listen for His voice in the people around us, especially those who seem simple or humble. By recognising God’s messengers, the poor, the lonely, the challenging voices of conscience, we grow in discernment. God speaks to us through Scripture, the Church, and moments we often overlook. Will we listen?

Meditation

  • Take a slow breath and place yourself before Jesus. Quietly say, “Lord, open my eyes,” asking Him to reveal His presence in your life.
  • Imagine His gentle light shining on the hidden ways He speaks to you. Ask Jesus: “Show me the messengers You send, even the ones I overlook.”
  • Reflect on the words, “Elijah has already come,” and consider how many missed His presence. Let your heart ache at the thought of missing God’s messengers in your own life.
  • Pray: “Jesus, help me recognise Your messengers and follow Your guidance. Open my eyes to see You in the humble, the unexpected, and the challenging. Grant me a discerning heart, eager to hear Your voice in every moment. Amen.”

Lord, open my eyes to recognise Your messengers.
