John 2:13-22

Explanation

Jesus enters the temple and drives out the merchants and money changers, declaring that God’s house is meant to be a house of prayer, not a marketplace. When questioned for a sign, He responds, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The people misunderstand, thinking He speaks of the physical building, but Jesus refers to the temple of His body. In doing so, He reveals that God’s presence now dwells fully in Him, the true and living Temple. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus becomes the new meeting place between heaven and earth, restoring true worship and holiness. The Temple of His Body reminds us that, through grace, God’s presence also dwells within us, calling us to live as temples of His Spirit and witnesses of His divine life in the world.

Reflection

Jesus reminds us that holiness does not dwell in things but in His living presence within us. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and together we form the Mystical Body of Christ. This means we must treat both our personal lives and our communities as sacred spaces, keeping them pure through love, mercy, and prayer. Christ calls us to holiness not only in church but in every thought, word, and action. In a world filled with distraction and impurity, we are invited to cleanse the temple of our hearts, allowing Jesus to purify and renew us. By rejecting sin, choosing virtue, and honouring His presence within us, we reflect His holiness to others and keep the Temple of His Body, both within us and among us, holy and alive with God’s Spirit.

Questions for Reflection

  • Do I treat my body and soul as sacred spaces where God dwells?
  • What areas of my life need cleansing so that Christ may dwell more fully in me?
  • How do I make space for prayer and silence in the “temple” of my daily life?
  • How do I contribute to the holiness and integrity of my parish community.
Temple of His Body

Honour the Temple of His Body by living in holiness and allowing Christ to dwell in your heart. Examine your conscience and cleanse your “inner temple,”.

Meditation

  • Lord Jesus, You are the living temple of God.
  • Come, cleanse my heart of all that keeps me from You.
  • Sanctify my thoughts, words, and deeds.
  • Teach me to worship not only with words, but with my whole life.

Lord Jesus, make my heart Your holy temple.
