Explanation

Jesus boldly calls out those plotting against Him and mourns over Jerusalem, declaring that the mercy of Christ cannot be silenced. He weeps for the city that kills prophets and rejects God’s presence, yet He presses on in compassion and mission. When warned that Herod seeks to kill Him, Jesus remains undeterred, affirming His commitment to continue healing and casting out demons today and tomorrow, reaching His goal on the third day. He declares, “It cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.” His sorrow over Jerusalem deepens as He longs to gather its children like a hen gathers her brood, but they refuse. This moment highlights Jesus’ unwavering dedication to His journey, even in the face of rejection. He rebukes the city, lamenting that a prophet must suffer and perish there, reminding us that God’s messengers often face rejection. Despite their hardened hearts, Jesus longs for their conversion. The Church teaches that Christ, the ultimate prophet, enters Jerusalem to offer salvation through His suffering.

Reflection

When I resist God’s call or stifle His voice, I miss the prophetic mercy of Christ reaching out to me. Yet, despite threats, rejection, or opposition, Jesus moves forward on His steadfast journey toward His ultimate mission, inviting me to join Him. His unwavering commitment to God’s will and His profound love, even for those who oppose Him, challenge me to reflect on my own willingness to embrace God’s plan, even when it leads me down difficult or uncomfortable paths. Today’s Gospel calls me to open my heart and welcome God’s word, even when it confronts my comfort or challenges my structures. Like Jesus, I am invited to respond with mercy, speak truth with compassion, and trust that God’s loving call will gather me under His protective wing. I will choose to listen, respond, and not turn away.
