Luke-18-9_14

Explanation

Jesus tells a parable of two men praying in the Temple, a proud Pharisee and a humble tax collector. The Pharisee boasts of his own righteousness, while the tax collector beats his chest and pleads for God’s mercy. Jesus declares that the humble man, not the self righteous one, goes home justified. He teaches that God lifts up the lowly and resists the proud. True repentance, born of humility, opens the heart to God’s mercy.

Reflection

This Gospel challenges me to let go of pride and embrace true humility. When I compare myself to others, I risk trusting in my own virtue instead of God’s mercy. The tax collector shows me the way, he confesses his need and surrenders to grace. Holiness begins when I stop justifying myself and start relying fully on God. Today, I choose humble repentance, not comparison, but trust in His mercy.

Questions for Reflection

  • In my prayers, do I praise God or congratulate myself?
  • Do I silently compare myself to others rather than humbly look to God?
  • In what areas of my life do I need to cultivate greater humility?
  • What attitudes or behaviors do I need to repent of today?
The Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector
